Easy steps to paint with a palette knife. Basic of impasto technique from basic to complex
What you’ll learn
Palette knife technique
How to paint a rose
To be eager to paint flowers with oil paint and a palette knife
It is difficult to paint flowers because it is not just a geometric object, but also a living creation of nature, delicate, transparent. How to paint a complex shape of roses with oil, while maintaining the sensuality and subtlety of this flower?
I made a tutorial on creating a rose with a palette knife in order to understand its geometric shape. After completing this lesson, it will be easy for you to create these delicate flowers, their image will be in your head and your hand will easily create the geometry of this flower following your creativity.
You will no longer need to look for the image of a flower, it will be worked out and you will be able to draw your attention to light, color, transparency, what makes your work special.
You will learn from this lesson not only how to paint a rose. You will also see what materials are used for impasto, how to mix colors and how to control the whole process of drawing a flower.
The impasto technique involves painting in several layers. Without knowing this subtlety, the work can easily fail and disappointment often forces you to quit painting and no longer take a palette knife in your hands.
This happens very often, and I sincerely want to fix this situation!
The secret is to correctly observe the thickness of the first layer. In my tutorial, I will talk about this in detail.
If you apply the background correctly, then you can adjust your work at any time. You will also learn how to do this from my tutorial.
Thus, you simply cannot fail!
We re going to need:
I used Van Gogh, and Cobra, you can also choose another firm but the colors usually all firms use the same. For a palette knife you don’t need any solvents and thinners.
Cadmium Yellow/ Azo yellow
Olive green/Viridian green
Azo red medium
Palette I usually use this tear-off palette. It’s very useful.
It has to be a soft one. You can check it if you try it on a canvas, it has to bend. If the canvas bends, it is a hard palette knife, and doesn’t match you.
The palette knife; "Fish" is universal and very useful. It has rounded edges. You’ll know more in the course about that.
Small canvas, oil paper or panel 8 x 8 inches, 20 x 20 cm
